AN ACT
Amending section 36-2224, Arizona Revised Statutes; relating to emergency medical services.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:
Section 1. Section 36-2224, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended to read:
36-2224. Transportation of patients; requirements
A. An ambulance service that transports a patient from a hospital within its certificated area to a hospital outside the certificated area is only required to transport that patient under medical direction to the nearest most appropriate facility as defined by federal medicare guidelines for ambulance services. This section shall subsection does not apply to any patient transport initiated or undertaken pursuant to the provisions of the federal emergency medical treatment and active labor act.
B. A certificated ambulance provider that transports a patient in response to a call made by dialing telephone number 911 or another designated emergency telephone number is only required to transport the patient to the closest appropriate emergency receiving facility capable of meeting the patient's needs.
