A RESOLUTION

 

Honoring gustav c. mohr, jr. for outstanding military service to the united states of america.

Whereas, Gustav Charles Mohr, Jr. was born on November 21, 1921 in St. Louis, Missouri; and

Whereas, Gus enlisted in the National Guard in August 1939 and volunteered in the United States Army in November 1940. He served more than twenty-three months in the infantry in Juneau, Alaska. Given the option to stay in Alaska, Gus instead volunteered for combat in Europe to "get this war over with"; and

Whereas, Gus was a member of the A Company of the 27th Armored Infantry of the 9th Armored Division, and his expertise was operating a 37mm and 50 caliber machine gun on an armored car; and

Whereas, in Europe, Gus fought in the Ardennes Forest and in the Battle of the Bulge, and on December 4, 1945 he was a member of the first division to cross the Remagen Bridge. After crossing the Rhine river, his division came within twenty-five miles of Berlin; and

Whereas, a staff sergeant with three bronze stars, Gus was honorably discharged in December 1945. He reenlisted in 1946 and was discharged from the Marines in August 1951; and

Whereas, Gus moved to Arizona in 1976 and worked as a maintenance man and an airplane mechanic. He and his wife Kathy currently live in Sun Lakes, Arizona.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona:

That the Members of the House of Representatives recognize the exceptional service of Gustav Charles Mohr, Jr. to the United States of America and express their gratitude to him for his courage and sacrifice in defense of liberty.
