A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

recognizing Phoenix Rotary 100 on its centennial and proclaiming March 1, 2014 as Arizona Rotary Day.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Whereas, Rotary International was founded in 1905 by Paul P. Harris when he formed the Rotary Club of Chicago; and

Whereas, Rotary International defines Rotary as "an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world"; and

Whereas, Rotary's commitment to "service above self" and the Rotary Four-Way Test have become models for community service and personal ethics worldwide; and

Whereas, Rotary International now has over 34,000 clubs with over 1.2 million members in 219 countries; and

Whereas, in January of 1914, a group of 30 Arizona businesspeople gathered in Phoenix and agreed to fund Arizona's first Rotary Club, each contributing $10 to provide the initial funding; and

Whereas, before becoming chartered, this group of Arizona Rotary organizers had to overcome the reservations of the members of both the newly formed Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, who were concerned that the Rotary group would compete with their group for members, and Rotary's national organization, who were concerned that Phoenix did not have enough residents for a Rotary club; and

Whereas, on March 1, 1914, Arizona's first Rotary club was officially established; and

Whereas, this Rotary club was the 100th Rotary club formed and was named Phoenix Rotary 100; and

Whereas, many of Arizona's most prominent citizens have been members of Phoenix Rotary 100, including governors, mayors, members of Congress and community leaders; and

Whereas, Phoenix Rotary 100 has contributed millions of dollars and thousands of volunteer hours to local charities in its first 100 years.  Among many other projects, the Phoenix Rotary 100 has packed 1 million meals for Feed My Starving Children, built the Field of Dreams recreational complex at Murphy School District, constructed a burn unit in a Mexican hospital, painted hundreds of rooms at the Phoenix UMOM homeless shelter, provided refurbished personal computers to local schools, adopted the families of the 158th Infantry Regiment of the National Guard, funded clean water wells in Kenya and supported numerous other worthy organizations, including Mission of Mercy, the Grand Canyon Boy Scout Council and the Salvation Army; and

Whereas, the Phoenix Rotary 100 was instrumental in restoring guns from the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri and having them installed as a permanent memorial at Wesley Bolin Park on the Arizona Capitol grounds; and

Whereas, March 1, 2014 marks Phoenix Rotary 100's centennial.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the Members of Legislature recognize Phoenix Rotary 100 on its centennial and proclaim March 1, 2014 as Arizona Rotary Day.
