Co-Chairman Yee called the meeting to order at 11:03 a.m. and attendance was taken.

 

Overview of School Safety Program and Oversight Committee

 

Matthew Simon, Senate Research Analyst, gave an overview of the School Safety Program and Oversight Committee and answered questions posed by the Committee.

 

Rani Collins answered questions regarding the number of School Resource Officers.

 

FY 2016 Funding Summary

 

Jean Ajamie, Director, School Safety and Prevention, Arizona Department of Education, distributed a handout entitled “ADE School Safety Program FY16 Funding Summary” (Attachment A) and gave an overview of funding for the School Safety Program.  Ms. Ajamie answered questions posed by the Committee.

 

Consideration of FY 2016 Award Recommendations

 

Jean Ajamie, Director, School Safety and Prevention, Arizona Department of Education, distributed a handout entitled “School Safety Program Legislative Oversight Committee FY 16 School Safety Program Award Recommendations” (Attachment B) and gave an overview of the Fiscal Year 2016 award recommendations. Ms. Ajamie explained the request to make payment contingent upon completing training requirements. Ms. Ajamie answered questions posed by the Committee.

 

Mr. Calderon moved approval of the proposed FY 16 School Safety Program Award Recommendations including the reservations noted in the comments. Mr. Swann seconded the motion.

 

The Committee discussed and requested clarification on the recommendations.

 

Ms. Ajamie answered questions posed by the Committee.

 

Senator Yee called for a vote on the motion to approve the funding of the FY 16 application award recommendations. The motion CARRIED by voice vote.

 

Consideration of Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education Contract

 

Joannie Collins, Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education, State Bar of Arizona’s non-profit charitable arm, distributed a handout entitled “Arizona Foundation for Legal Services & Education Arizona School Safety Program Law-Related Education Academy FY 2015-2016 Proposal” (Attachment C) and gave an overview of the organization’s involvement in the School Safety Program. Ms. Collins explained the services provided in the contract and answered questions posed by the Committee.

 

Dr. DePrez moved the School Safety Program Oversight Committee approve the renewal of the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education FY 2016 contract. Ms. Wallace seconded the motion. The motion CARRIED by voice vote.

 

Senator Yee presented to Dr. DePrez, who is retiring from Hamilton High School, an appreciation award for his service as an educational leader in Arizona. Senator Yee stated that Dr. DePrez has been leading Hamilton High School for the past 17 years and has been a member of this Committee since its infancy.

 

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:51 a.m.
