(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)
To the Arizona Department of Transportation:
Your memorialist respectfully represents:
Whereas, Native Americans have served with honor and distinction in the United States armed forces and have defended the United States of America for more than two hundred years; and
Whereas, Native Americans have served in wars involving the United States from Valley Forge to the hostilities in Afghanistan and Iraq; and
Whereas, Native Americans have served in the armed forces with the highest record of military service of any group in the United States; and
Whereas, the courage, determination and fighting spirit of Native Americans have strengthened and continue to strengthen the United States, including the United States armed forces; and
Whereas, Native Americans have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the United States, even in times when Native Americans were not citizens of the United States; and
Whereas, the designation of the portion of United States Route 89 that is located between the Utah state line and Flagstaff as the "Native American Veterans Highway" will honor the continuing service and sacrifice of Native Americans in the United States armed forces.
Wherefore your memorialist, the Senate of the State of Arizona, the House of Representatives concurring, prays:
1. That the Arizona Department of Transportation designate the portion of United States Route 89 that is located between the Utah state line and Flagstaff as the "Native American Veterans Highway" pursuant to section 41‑514, Arizona Revised Statutes.
2. That the Arizona Department of Transportation approve, place and maintain appropriate signage to identify the Native American Veterans Highway.
3. That the Secretary of State transmit copies of this Memorial to the Director of the Arizona Department of Transportation and the President of the Navajo Nation.
