Abstract

Provisions

1.       Appropriates $425,000 from the GF to AZDA in FY 2019. (Sec. 1)

2.       Directs AZDA to increase the minimum wage for non-certified livestock inspectors to $18/hour. (Sec. 1)

Current Law

Livestock officers and inspectors check for health, marks and brands at loading stations, State exits, and where livestock are gathered to be sold, slaughtered, transported, conveyed, shipped or driven from pasture to an out-of-state destination (A.R.S. § 3-1332). Livestock officers and inspectors may stop any person with cause or reasonable suspicion and enter any premises where livestock are kept or maintained. If admittance is refused and with probable cause, a livestock officer may request an administrative inspection warrant (A.R.S. § 3-1331).

Within 12 months after employment, a livestock officer must successfully complete the law enforcement training course prescribed by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board to achieve permanent employee status. This does not apply to livestock inspectors (A.R.S. § 3-1208).

Additional Information

According to AZDA, there are 11 livestock officers, 7 full-time livestock inspectors, 7 part-time livestock inspectors and 1 support staff.
