Relating to administration of inhalers by school nurses.
Provisions
1. Expands who may administer an inhaler at school or a school-sponsored activity to include a nurse who is under contract with a LEA. (Sec. 1)
2. Makes conforming changes. (Sec. 1-3)
Current Law
Employees of LEAs may administer an inhaler, or assist in the administration of an inhaler, to a student or adult at school or a school-sponsored activity if:
1. The employee is acting pursuant to a standing order issued by an authorized health professional;
2. The employee has been trained in the administration of inhalers; and
3. The employee believes in good faith that the person is exhibiting symptoms of respiratory distress (A.R.S. § 15-158).
SBE is required to adopt rules, in consultation with stakeholders, for LEAs who elect to administer inhalers (A.R.S. § 15-203). LEAs may prescribe and enforce policies and procedures for the emergency administration of inhalers by trained employees (A.R.S. §§ 15-189.04 and 15-342).
