Relating to the suspension and lapsing of K-8 school districts.
Provisions
1. Extends the amount of time a K-8 district may be below the student count threshold for suspension and lapsing from three months to one year. (Sec. 1)
2. Permits county school superintendents to provide additional time to recruit students and reach the threshold before lapsing the school district. (Sec. 1)
3. Instructs the county school superintendent to report a suspension and reasons for suspension to the school district. (Sec. 1)
4. Makes technical changes. (Sec. 1)
Current Law
School districts that have less than eight students for three months during the school year may be suspended by the county school superintendent. If the school district is suspended, the county school superintendent is directed to report the suspension and reasons for suspension to the board of supervisors at the next meeting. The board of supervisors is authorized to declare the school district lapsed and attach the territory to adjoining school districts, dispose of the school district's property and apply the proceeds to the lapsed district's credit (A.R.S. § 15-469).
