Purpose
Designates August 7 of each year as Purple Heart Day.
Background
On August 7, 1782, General George Washington established the Badge of Military Merit to honor enlisted soldiers of the Continental Army. Today this honor is known as the Purple Heart.
The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President to any member of the United States Armed Forces who has been wounded or killed while serving. Approximately 1.8 million Purple Hearts have been awarded since 1932.
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Proclaims August 7, annually, as Purple Heart Day.
2. Stipulates that Purple Heart Day is not a legal holiday.
3. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
