Beirut barracks bombing remembrance day
Purpose
Designates October 23 of each year as Beirut Marine Barracks Bombing Remembrance Day.
Background
On October 23, 1983, 241 members of the United States Armed Forces were killed by a terrorist explosion while on a peacekeeping mission in Beirut, Lebanon. Memorials honoring the victims have been erected in Florida, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Proclaims October 23, annually, as Beirut Marine Barracks Bombing Remembrance Day.
2. Stipulates that Beirut Marine Barracks Bombing Remembrance Day is not a legal holiday.
3. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
