ARIZONA STATE SENATE

Fifty-Third Legislature, Second Regular Session

REVISED

FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1140

state land department; continuation.

Purpose

Continues the State Land Department (SLD) for eight years.

Background

The SLD oversees approximately 9.2 million acres of state trust land, as well as the natural products derived from the land.  The SLD's purpose is to manage the trust land and maximize revenues for its 13 beneficiaries, the largest of which is K-12 schools (www.land.az.gov).

The Senate Natural Resources, Energy and Water and the House of Representatives Land, Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee of Reference (COR) held a public meeting on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, to review and consider the SLD's responses to the sunset factors. The COR recommended that the Legislature continue the SLD for eight years and that the SLD return to the COR with an update on its strategic plan in four years. The SLD terminates on July 1, 2018, unless continued by the Legislature.

There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
