Assigned to ED FOR COMMITTEE
ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Fifty-Third Legislature, Second Regular Session
schools; dropout recovery programs; report
Purpose
Requires the State Board of Education (SBE) to submit an annual report on the outcomes of dropout recovery programs.
Background
The SBE prescribes standards and achievement testing requirements for high school dropout recovery programs that attempt to ensure that programs are compatible with public school education goals and requirements and include requiring curriculum aligned to academic standards, providing standardized tests and meeting the state graduation requirements. Mentors develop learning plans for eligible students that include courses to be completed, expectations, competency exams to be taken and the anticipated end date. The monthly participation in a dropout recovery program is recorded on monthly reports to the Arizona Department of Education, which include participation in dropout recovery programs and student progress in meeting expectations (A.R.S. § 15-901.06).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Requires the SBE to submit an annual report that details the outcomes of dropout recovery programs, including the number of pupils who participate and who graduate from high school to:
a) the Governor;
b) the President of the Senate; and
c) the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
2. Requires the SBE to provide a copy of the annual report to the Secretary of State.
3. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
