FACT SHEET FOR H.B. 2536

 

dual enrollment; homeschooled children

 

Purpose

 

An emergency measure that allows homeschooled children to participate in dual enrollment.

 

Background

 

Community colleges may offer college courses that can be counted toward both high school and college graduation requirements at a high school during the school day. Students enrolled for college credit must be high school juniors or seniors and must satisfy prerequisites for the courses they take. Courses must be previously evaluated and approved, be at a higher level than taught by the high school, and must be transferrable to one of the state universities or be applicable to a community college occupational degree or certificate program (A.R.S. § 15-1821.01).

 

There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.

 

Provisions

 

1.      Allows homeschooled children to fully participate in dual enrollment, including receipt of college credit.

 

2.      Makes technical changes.

 

3.      Becomes effective on signature of the Governor, if the emergency clause is enacted.
