Purpose
Establishes that the required three hours of opioid-related, substance abuse disorder-related or addiction-related continuing medical education (CME) hours must be included as part of a health professional's CME requirement.
Background
Currently, a person who holds an active license to practice medicine in Arizona must satisfy a CME requirement that is designed to provide the necessary understanding of current developments, skills, procedures or treatment related to the practice of medicine (A.R.S. § 32-1434). The amount of required CME hours is determined by each health professional regulatory board.
Laws 2018, First Special Session, Chapter 1 establishes that a health professional who is authorized to prescribe schedule II controlled substances must complete three hours of opioid-related, substance abuse disorder-related or addiction-related CME each license renewal cycle as part of any CME requirements for that health professional.
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Establishes that the required three hours of opioid-related, substance abuse disorder-related or addiction-related CME hours be included as part of a health professional's CME requirement, if that heath professional prescribes schedule II controlled substances.
2. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
