Assigned to NREW FOR COMMITTEE
ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Fifty-Third Legislature, Second Regular Session
forest management; beneficial policies
Purpose
Urges the United States Forest Service (USFS), United States Bureau of Land Management (USBLM) and the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) to take immediate action to implement management policies beneficial to promoting healthy forests in Arizona.
Background
The USFS manages wildland fires on national forest and grasslands and coordinates with state and local agencies to manage state lands. According to the USFS, wildfires have changed over time. Forests are experiencing longer fire seasons with more extreme fires burning more acres on average each year (USFS).
DFFM was established to prevent and suppress wildland fires on state and private lands located outside incorporated municipalities. DFFM may enter into cooperative agreements with other state or federal agencies, departments, political subdivisions or persons to prevent and suppress wildfires (A.R.S. §§ 37-1301 & 37-1303).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Urges the USFS, USBLM and DFFM to take immediate action to implement management policies beneficial to promoting healthy forests in Arizona.
2. Directs the Secretary of State to transmit copies of this memorial as indicated.
