Assigned to GOV FOR COMMITTEE
ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Fifty-Third Legislature, Second Regular Session
United Nations; anti-Israel activity; opposition
Purpose
Expresses the Legislature's support for moving the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and opposes the United Nation's (U.N.) anti-Israel activity.
Background
The Jerusalem Embassy Act (Act) passed in 1995 declares the United States maintains its embassy in the functioning capital of every country except for our strategic ally, the State of Israel. The Act includes statements of U.S. policy concerning Jerusalem including: 1) Jerusalem should remain an undivided city in which the rights of every ethnic and religious group are protected; 2) Jerusalem should be recognized as the capital of the State of Israel; and 3) the United States Embassy to Israel should be established in Jerusalem no later than May 31, 1999 (Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995).
A proclamation signed by President Donald Trump on December 6, 2017 recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and declared that the United States Embassy to Israel will be relocated from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
