HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 2017

A CONCURRENT resolution

supporting the generation and use of nuclear energy in arizona.

(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Whereas, reliable, clean, affordable energy is vital to Arizona's economy and way of life; and

Whereas, for over three decades, Arizona's economy has been powered by clean, carbon-free energy generated by the largest nuclear power plant in the country; and

Whereas, nuclear power is both clean and affordable, providing millions of Arizona residents with power at rates far lower than those of other sources of energy; and

Whereas, as a base-load fuel resource, nuclear power is the most reliable and resilient source of power, providing energy for Arizona 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year; and

Whereas, nuclear energy has served as the backbone of the country's energy supply for over fifty years; and

Whereas, in addition to providing reliable, low-cost energy, nuclear power plants have enormous economic benefits, employing thousands of workers and producing millions of dollars in tax revenue; and

Whereas, the United States Department of Energy and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission have cautioned that the premature shutdown of nuclear power plants could jeopardize both the nation's electric reliability and the ability to combat climate change; and

Whereas, the premature closure of nuclear power plants would require states to find other sources of energy that are typically more expensive and less reliable than nuclear power.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona, the Senate concurring:

That the Members of the Legislature support the ongoing use of nuclear power in Arizona as a safe, affordable, reliable and carbon-free source of energy generation and express their commitment to policies that ensure nuclear energy continues to thrive in an increasingly challenging energy environment.
