A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Recognizing April 30, 2019 as International Jazz day and Proclaiming April 2019 as jazz appreciation month in arizona.

Whereas, April 30 is recognized as International Jazz Day as established in 2011 by the work of Herbie Hancock and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization; and
Whereas, the Smithsonian Institution created Jazz Appreciation Month in 2011 as an opportunity for people to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz music for the entire month of April; and
Whereas, Dr. William "Doc" Jones created the International Jazz Day Festival in 2013 and incorporated the International Jazz Day AZ Foundation, a nonprofit organization, in 2015; and
Whereas, the International Jazz Day AZ Foundation is overseen by its President, William "Doc" Jones, and his award-winning board of directors; and
Whereas, jazz music is recognized all over the world as an art form born in America; and
Whereas, jazz music is now an international art form known for its diversity, its respect for human rights and human dignity, and its support of eradicating discrimination, promoting peace and connecting cultures; and
Whereas, jazz music promotes freedom of expression, fosters gender equality and reinforces the role of youth for social change; and
Whereas, jazz music raises awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding and reinforces international cooperation and communication; and
Whereas, on April 30, 2019, International Jazz Day festivals will continue to bring together ethnic groups, communities, schools, artists, historians, academia and jazz enthusiasts throughout the State of Arizona and around the world to celebrate and learn about jazz music and its roots, future and impact; and
Whereas, the International Jazz Day AZ Foundation plans to continue to produce important jazz festivals to celebrate International Jazz Day, as local governments and area residents embrace the day and appreciate the role that jazz music plays in our daily lives and in our communities.
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona, the Senate concurring:
1. That the Members of the Legislature recognize April 30, 2019 as International Jazz Day and proclaim April 2019 as Jazz Appreciation Month in Arizona.
2. That the Members of the Legislature impart accolades of honor, commendation, appreciation and recognition to the role jazz music plays in this state and the nation.
