History

K-12 education funding for Arizona school districts is addressed at the state level and utilizes a per pupil formula to allocate funds to school districts throughout the state (A.R.S. Title 15 chapter 9). Each school district's maintenance and operation budget has a limit comprised of two parts: base support level and transportation support level (A.R.S. Title 15 Chapter 9 Article 3). School districts in Arizona cannot increase their budgets beyond this limit without asking voter permission through an override election (A.R.S. §15-481). If a school district's budget exceeds its limit for the year the governing board must order an override election to be held as prescribed in statute (A.R.S. §15-481).
