Continues the Arizona Medical Board (AMB) for eight years.
History
The AMB was established in 1913 and its mission is to protect public safety through the judicious licensing, regulation, and education of all doctors of medicine. The primary duty of the AMB is to protect the public from unlawful, incompetent, unqualified, impaired or unprofessional practitioners of allopathic medicine through licensure, regulation and rehabilitation of the profession. The AMB's responsibilities include issuing licenses, permits and registrations; investigating and resolving conflicts; providing information to the public; and administering the Physician Health Program (A.R.S. § 32-1403).
The AMB is made up of 12 members which includes: eight actively practicing physicians and four members of the public, one of which must be a licensed nurse. Members of the AMB are appointed by the governor and serve a term of five years with an allowance of one additional term (A.R.S. § 32-1402). The 2017 sunset review reported that the AMB licenses and regulates over 23,423 doctors of medicine.
In A.R.S. § 41-2955, each new and existing state agency has a duration not to exceed 10-years and subjects each agency to a sunset review for continuation. The current termination of AMB is July 1, 2019. (A.R.S. § 41-3019.04) The Senate and House of Representatives Health and Human Services Committees of Reference (COR) met independently on January 16, 2019 and January 17, 2019 respectively, and recommended an 8 year continuation of the AMB.
