Establishes a sixth area health education
center focusing on Indian health care delivery system, within the College of Medicine
at the University of Arizona.
History
Laws 1990, Chapter 342 required the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) to establish the Arizona Area Health Education System (System) in the College of Medicine at the University of Arizona. Pursuant to A.R.S. § 15-1643, the System currently consists of five area health education centers that focus on certain geographic areas that lack services by healthcare professionals. These centers focus on the following regions: Eastern Arizona; Greater Valley; Northern Arizona; Southeast Arizona; and Western Arizona (AHEC).
ABOR appoints a governing board for each center that contains 10 to 20 board members who are health care providers and consumers who reflect the ethnic representation of each geographic location. Each centers' governing board is required to make recommendations regarding health professionals' educational needs, local program priorities and the allocation of System monies (A.R.S. § 15-1643(C)).
Each center is required to provide health professional education programs that may include an undergraduate clinical training program, graduate program and postgraduate continuing education. Additionally, these centers must conduct programs to recruit and retain minority students in health professions, and continuing education programs for health professionals (A.R.S. § 15-1643(D)).
