ARIZONA STATE SENATE

appropriation; state board; charter schools
Purpose
Appropriates $630,900 and 8 full-time employee (FTE) positions from the state General Fund in FY 2020 to the State Board for Charter Schools (SBCS) for personal services and expenditures.
Background
The SBCS was established in 1994 to adopt rules and policies for charter school operations and oversees 539 charter schools. The SBCS approves quality applications and grants charters to qualified applicants. It also monitors academic performance and fiscal compliance amongst schools (A.R.S. §15-182).
Currently, the SBCS has 11 FTE positions, including an Executive Director, Assistant Director of Operations and Finance and Assistant Director of Academic Affairs.
A charter school is a public school established by contract with the State Board of Education, the SBCS, a university under the jurisdiction of the Arizona Board of Regents or a community college district (A.R.S. § 15-101).
S.B. 1118 appropriates $630,900 and 8 FTE positions from the state General Fund in FY 2020 to fund the SBCS.
Provisions
1. Appropriates an additional $630,900 and 8 FTE positions from the state General Fund in FY 2020 to the SBCS, for personal services and employee-related expenditures for the following positions:
a) four education program managers;
b) three financial program managers; and
c) one audit program manager.
2. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
