ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Fifty-Fourth Legislature, First Regular Session
POW/MIA flag; display
Purpose
Allows the prisoner of war and missing in action (POW/MIA) flag to be displayed on or in front of court buildings on any day when the United States (U.S.) flag is displayed.
Background
U.S. Code designates the POW/MIA flag as a symbol of the nation's concern and commitment to resolving the fates of Americans held prisoner, missing or unaccounted for. The flag must be displayed on POW/MIA flag days below the U.S. flag at certain locations including the U.S. Capitol, the White House, certain war memorials, each national cemetery, federal government buildings and major military installations. POW/MIA flag days include Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, National POW/MIA Day and Veterans Day (36 U.S.C. § 902).
Statute requires the POW/MIA flag to be displayed on or in front of the state capitol building, county superior court buildings, city and town halls and the main administrative building of each county on any day when the U.S. flag is displayed (A.R.S. § 38-449).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
