AN ACT
amending section 41‑1743, Arizona Revised Statutes; appropriating monies; relating to the highway patrol.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:
Section 1. Section 41-1743, Arizona Revised Statutes, is amended to read:
41-1743. Duties of highway patrol; reasonable response requirement
A. The highway patrol shall patrol the highways of the state, both day and night, and enforce the laws of the state. The highway patrol shall also investigate accidents which that occur upon on the highways, procure the names of drivers and descriptions and license numbers of the motor vehicles involved and transmit forthwith to the vehicle superintendent department of transportation a copy of the report of the investigation.
B. The highway patrol shall have a sufficient number of highway patrol officers on duty in each county of this state that borders Mexico in order to respond to any emergency in a reasonable amount of time.
Sec. 2. Appropriation; maintaining sufficient number of highway patrol officers on duty; exemption
A. The sum of $500,000 is appropriated from the state general fund in fiscal year 2020-2021 to the department of public safety to maintain a sufficient number of highway patrol officers on duty as required by section 41‑1743, Arizona Revised Statutes, as amended by this act.
B. The appropriation made in subsection A of this section is exempt from the provisions of section 35-190, Arizona Revised Statutes, relating to lapsing of appropriations.
