(TEXT OF BILL BEGINS ON NEXT PAGE)

Whereas, the State of Arizona has a rich history of scientific discovery and excellence that is sustained today by a new generation of scientists and engineers; and

Whereas, early Arizonan scientists made major breakthroughs, from Clyde Tombaugh's discovery of Pluto to A.E. Douglass's pioneering in the field of dendrochronology, the science of counting tree rings, which has contributed directly to forest fire management practices; and

Whereas, this legacy is continued by the nearly 100,000 scientists and engineers working in the State of Arizona as of 2017, as determined by the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics; and

Whereas, these scientists continue to make major contributions that support the health and well-being of Arizona's citizens through biomedical and clinical research; and

Whereas, these scientists explore and protect Arizona's history through their work in the field of archaeology; and

Whereas, Arizona's scientists and engineers make the state safer through infrastructure research and construction; and

Whereas, Arizona's scientific community fuels economic growth through innovation; and

Whereas, these scientists promote a culture of excellence that draws opportunities to Arizona, including the addition of over 4,000 technology‑sector jobs in 2017; and

Whereas, Arizona's scientific community is actively innovating to solve the state's most pressing scientific issue of water conservation to support the health of Arizona's citizens and economy; and

Whereas, all scientific work done in the state directly and indirectly benefits the citizenry of Arizona; and

Whereas, a strong relationship between Arizona's scientists and this state improves life for all Arizonans.

Therefore

Be it resolved by the Senate of the State of Arizona:

That the Members of the Senate recognize the tremendous contributions Arizona's scientific community makes to the State of Arizona, specifically their work in promoting the health and prosperity of Arizona's citizens through scientific inquiry.
