SB 1112: veterans' home facility; Mohave county

Overview

Provides funding to the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services (ADVS) to construct and establish a veterans' home facility in Mohave County.

History

Laws 1999, Chapter 164 established ADVS with a governor-appointed director. The duties of ADVS include:

1)    Assisting veterans and their families and dependents in presenting, providing and establishing claims, privileges, rights and benefits they may have under federal, state or local law;

2)    Informing veterans and their families and dependents and military and civilian authorities about federal, state and local laws enacted to benefit veterans and their families and dependents and members of the armed forces;

3)    Collecting information relating to services and facilities available to veterans; and

4)    Cooperating with all government and private agencies receiving services for or benefits to veterans and their families and dependents (A.R.S. § 41-603).

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-603, ADVS may acquire property to construct and operate veterans' home facilities. ADVS currently has two veteran home facilities located in Phoenix and Tucson. Funds have been appropriated to construct two additional veteran home facilities in Flagstaff and Yuma.  Laws 2014, Chapter 15 appropriated $9,200,000 to ADVS for the construction and establishment of a veterans' home facility in Yuma. Laws 2016, Chapter 126 appropriated $10,000,000 to ADVS for the construction and establishment of a veterans' home facility in Flagstaff.

2.    Allows ADVS to spend the monies only if the U.S. government commits to funding at least 65% of the total cost. (Sec. 1)

3.    Exempts the appropriation from lapsing until July 1, 2025. (Sec. 1)
