Overview

Modifies an affiliated practice agreement between a dental hygienists and dentist.

History

Current law allows a licensed dentist and dental hygienist to enter into an affiliated practice relationship to deliver dental hygiene services. A dental hygienist must satisfy all of the following to be eligible to enter into an affiliated practice agreement: 1) hold an active license in good standing; 2) enter into an affiliated practice relationship with a dentist who holds an active license in good standing; and 3) be actively engaged in dental hygiene practice for at least 500 hours in each of the two years immediately preceding the affiliated practice agreement.

An affiliated practice agreement between a dental hygienist and a dentist must be in writing and include at least: 1) an identification of the affiliated practice settings in which the dental hygienist may deliver services; and 2) an identification of the services to be provided and any procedures and standing orders the dental hygienists must follow. (A.R.S. § 32-1289.01(a)(b)(c))

2.    Modifies an affiliated practice agreement between a dental hygienists and dentist to include conditions under which the affiliated practice dental hygienist may administer local anesthesia and provide root planning. (Sec. 3)

3.    Allows an affiliated practice agreement to include the circumstances under which a dental hygienist must consult with the dentist before initiating further treatment on patients who have not been seen by a dentist within a year after the initial treatment by the dental hygienist.  (Sec. 3)

4.    Removes the requirement prohibiting a dentist in an affiliated practice relationship from permitting the provision of dental hygiene services by more than three affiliated practice dental hygienists at any one time. (Sec. 3)

5.    Prohibits affiliated practice dental hygienists from administering nitrous oxide. (Sec. 3)

6.    Makes technical and conforming changes. (Sec. 1, 2 and 3)
