SB 1324: opioid prescriptions; naloxone requirement; exceptions

Sponsor:  Senator Brophy McGee, LD 28

Committee on Health & Human Services

Overview

Exempts a health care professional from prescribing naloxone hydrochloride or any other opioid antagonist to a patient who is receiving hospice or end-of-life care.

History

A health professional may not issue a new prescription to be filled or dispensed for a patient outside of a health care institution for a Schedule II controlled substance that is an opioid that exceeds 90 morphine milligram equivalents per day (MME). Statute outlines exceptions to the 90 MME limitation, including active oncology diagnosis, traumatic injury and treatment for burns. Outlined within is a process for prescribing more than 90 MME per day. If a patient is prescribed more than 90 MME per day, then the prescribing health professional must also prescribe naloxone hydrochloride or any opioid antagonist (A.R.S. § 32-3248.01).
