SB 1356: civics test; passing score
Sponsor: Senator Allen S, LD 6
Committee on Education
Overview
Increases, from 60 to 70, the number of questions a student must answer correctly to pass the mandatory civics test. Allows students in the 7th and 8th grades to take the civics test.
History
Statute requires the State Board of Education to prescribe a minimum course of study and competency requirements that incorporate adopted academic standards for the graduation of students from high school. The academic standards in social studies are required to include personal finance and American civics education.
In order to graduate from high school or obtain a high school equivalency diploma, statute mandates that a pupil correctly answer 60 out of 100 questions on a test that is identical to the civics portion of the naturalization test used by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. Statute directs public schools to document, on the student's transcript, that the student has passed the civics test (A.R.S. § 15-701.01).
