FACT SHEET FOR S.B. 1349

 

appropriation; students with disabilities

Purpose                                                                                                                                                                   

            Appropriates $1,000,000 from the state General Fund (GF) in FY 2021 to the Department of Health Services (DHS) for programs for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Background

            DHS is responsible for promoting, protecting and improving the health and wellness of individuals and communities in Arizona. Currently, DHS operates programs in the following areas: 1) disease prevention and control; 2) health promotion; 3) community public health; 4) environmental health; 5) maternal and child health; 6) emergency preparedness; 7) emergency services; and 8) regulation of childcare centers, assisted living centers, nursing homes, hospitals and other health care providers and institutions.

            S.B. 1349 appropriates $1,000,000 from the state GF in FY 2021 to DHS.

Provisions

1.      Appropriates $1,000,000 from the state GF in FY 2021 to DHS for grants to statewide organizations that are dedicated to promoting evidenced-based health, unified sports, leadership and transition programs for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in preschool through grade 12.

2.      Requires the monies be spent only when the organization collects matching monies of gifts, grants and donations from sources other than the state and on outreach efforts, materials and costs associated with the programs.

3.      Exempts DHS from statutory procurement requirements for the purposes of this act.

4.      Exempts the appropriation from lapsing.

5.      Becomes effective on the general effective date.
