ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Fifty-Fourth Legislature, Second Regular Session
technical
correction; ballot; presidential candidates
(NOW: presidential electors; ballots)
Purpose
Allows, rather than requires, the names of the presidential electors to be printed on the ballot for presidential candidates.
Background
The chair of a state committee of a political party that is qualified for representation on an official party ballot at the primary election and that is accorded a column on the general election ballot must appoint presidential electors equal to the number of Senators and Representatives in the U.S. Congress (A.R.S. § 16-344). Statute states that when presidential electors are to be voted for, the presidential and vice-presidential candidates must be grouped and printed together on the ballot and arranged in alphabetical order according to the presidential candidate's surname. Statute also specifies the way in which the presidential electors are presented on the ballot. The presidential electors must be enclosed in a bracketed list next to candidates for president and vice president. Directly below each presidential candidate's surname is the vice-presidential candidate seeking joint election. The indication of a presidential candidate is counted for each presidential elector (A.R.S. § 16-507).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
