HB 2315: school districts; electronic signature filing

Sponsor:  Representative Kavanagh, LD 23

Committee on Government & Elections

Overview

Adds a school board office to the list of offices that the Secretary of State (SOS) must provide a system for qualified electors to sign a nomination petition by way of a secure internet portal.

History

The SOS is required to provide a secure internet portal and a system for qualified electors to sign a nomination petition for candidates for city, town or county office and the office of precinct committeeman.  This system must allow only those qualified electors who are eligible to sign a petition for a particular candidate and must provide a method for the qualified elector to have their identity properly verified.  Additionally, the SOS needs to be able to transmit those filings or a facsimile of those filings to the officer in charge of elections for the appropriate office.  Current statute allows a candidate to choose to collect up to the minimum number of required nomination petition signatures by use of the online signature collection system (A.R.S. § 16-317).

Provisions

1.    Includes a school board office candidate for the SOS to provide a system for qualified electors to sign a nomination petition by way of a secure internet portal. (Sec. 1)
