SB 1401: alternative teacher development program; extension

Overview
Continues the Alternative Teacher Development Program (Program) to July 1, 2030.
History
The Program accelerates the process of identifying, training and placing highly qualified individuals into low-income schools through the use of teaching intern certification and the identification of a qualified service provider. The State Board of Education must award a matching grant to a service provider that demonstrates that its Program serves Arizona public schools and that it:
1) Is a nonprofit alternative teacher recruitment organization providing services in Arizona for at least 10 years;
2) Serves only public schools with a majority of low-income students;
3) Requires participants to hold accredited baccalaureate degrees;
4) Maintains a competitive application and selection process;
5) Requires all participating individuals to commit to serving at least two years as a teacher in a low-income Arizona public school; and
6) Provides ongoing support, evaluations and professional development to teachers placed in a classroom.(A.R.S. § 15-552).
The service provider must annually report to the Arizona Department of Education:
1) The number of teachers placed in low-income schools;
2) The number of students served;
3) Demographic data of students in classrooms served by teachers;
4) A listing of public schools in which teachers were placed;
5) Collected classroom-level data that demonstrates the academic progress of students;
6) A descriptive summary of ongoing support, evaluations and professional development to Program teachers;
7) The performance classifications of Program teachers; and
8) A total of all matching monies raised (A.R.S. § 15-552)
Laws 2015, Chapter 226 continued the Program to July 1, 2020.
