Committee on Government & Elections
Overview
Makes requirements, notwithstanding any other law, for election data, results and equipment relating to the storage and country of origin.
History
Current statute requires the officer in charge of elections to ensure that electronic data and electronic or digital images of ballots are protected from physical and electronic access and that all security measures are at least as protective as those prescribed for paper ballots (A.R.S. § 16-625).
The Secretary of State is instructed to appoint a committee of three people to be able to render an opinion based on knowledge of, training in or education in electronic voting systems, procedures and security. The committee is charged with investigating and testing the various types of vote recording or tabulating machines or devices that may be used. The Secretary of State will then make final adoption of the type to be certified for use in this state after the recommendations submitted by the committee. The machines or devices used at any election for federal, state or county offices may only be certified for use and used in the state if they comply with the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (A.R.S. § 16-442).
Provisions
1. Requires all election data and results to remain in this country and prohibits the transfer, transmission or storage of the data and results in any other country. (Sec. 1)
2. Stipulates that all election equipment, including computers, paper and other supplies, must be made in America. (Sec. 1)
