ARIZONA STATE SENATE
Fifty-Fifth Legislature, First Regular Session
presidential electors; ballots
Purpose
Requires the names of the presidential electors be enclosed in a bracketed list only if the presidential electors are printed on the ballot.
Background
The chairman of the state committee of a political party that is qualified for representation on the ballot must appoint candidates for the office of presidential elector equal to the number of U.S. Senators and Representatives from Arizona (A.R.S. § 16-344). A county board of supervisors must prepare and provide ballots containing the names of all persons whose certificates of nomination have been filed (A.R.S. § 16-503). When presidential electors are to be voted for, the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of each party must be grouped and printed together and arranged in alphabetical order according to the presidential candidate's surname on the ballot. Presidential electors must be enclosed in a bracketed list next to the surname of the presidential candidate and vice-presidential candidate who are seeking election. The vice-presidential candidate must be listed directly below the name of the presidential candidate (A.R.S. § 16-507).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
