Purpose
Increases, beginning January 1, 2025, the salary of county attorneys, assessors, recorders, sheriffs, superintendents of schools, supervisors and treasurers by $20,000. Increases, effective January 1, 2023, the salary of a clerk of the superior court in a county with a population of 500,000 or more persons from $76,600 to $78,132 and in a county with a population of less than 500,000 persons from $63,800 to $65,076. Requires, beginning January 1, 2024, clerks of the superior court to receive an annual salary increase of two percent.
Background
Statue outlines annual salaries for elected county officers. For counties with a population of 500,000 or more persons, the annual salaries of the county assessor, recorder, superintendent of schools, supervisors and treasurer are $76,600. For counties with a population of fewer than 500,000 persons, the annual salaries of the county assessor, recorder, superintendent of schools, supervisors and treasurer are $63,800. The salary for a county attorney is $123,678 and the salary of a county sheriff is $100,824 (A.R.S. § 11-419).
The salary of a clerk of the superior court is $76,600 in a county with a population of 500,000 or more persons and $63,800 in a county with a population of fewer than 500,000 persons (A.R.S. § 12-281).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Increases, beginning January 1, 2025, the annual salary of the following elected county officers by $20,000:
a) for county attorneys, from $123,678 to $143,678;
b) for county sheriffs, from $100,824 to $120,824;
c) for county assessors, recorders, superintendents of schools, supervisors and treasurers in a county with a population of 500,000 or more persons, from $76,600 to $96,600; and
d) for county assessors, recorders, superintendents of schools, supervisors and treasurers in a county with a population of fewer than 500,000 persons, from $63,800 to $83,800.
2. Increases, effective January 1, 2023, the salary of a clerk of the superior court from:
a) $76,600 to $78,132 in a county with a population of 500,000 or more persons; and
b) $63,800 to $65,076 in a county with a population of fewer than 500,000 persons.
3. Requires, beginning January 1, 2024, the annual salary of a clerk of the superior court to increase by two percent annually.
4. Makes technical and conforming changes.
5. Becomes effective on the general effective date, with a delayed effective date as noted.
Amendments Adopted by Committee
