A Concurrent Resolution

                     on the death of jimmie muñoz, sr.

Jimmie Muñoz, Sr., former constable of the South Mountain Justice Court and member of the 101st Airborne Division, passed away at the age of seventy-six on August 16, 2021 due to complications from COVID-19.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Mr. Muñoz grew up in the former Golden Gate Barrio.  He never forgot where he came from and loved to reminisce about his upbringing there, and he even installed the complete bar from the local neighborhood bar La Casita in his home.

After high school, Mr. Muñoz and a few of his neighborhood friends joined the United States Army, where he served for six years.  He returned home from service and worked at a ranch where he cared for the livestock. Through that rancher lifestyle, Mr. Muñoz was able to show his children how to be compassionate to animals, a trait that he would display to the people of his community, including in his job of seventeen years as constable.

A exemplar of unity, Mr. Muñoz believed it was essential that the community came together.  During the 1980s and 1990s, Mr. Muñoz and his wife, former Arizona state legislator and longtime Roosevelt School District Governing Board member, Norma Muñoz, helped start the South Mountain Youth Development Association and opened a neighborhood local hangout spot called The Batters Cage.

During the holidays, Mr. Muñoz would run a Christmas tree lot out of his front yard so his community had the opportunity to buy a tree without having to travel too far out of the neighborhood.  His longtime tradition of assisting during Sacred Heart's Christmas Mass provided a chance to share the rich history of his old former neighborhood, the Golden Gate Barrio.

Mr. Muñoz was a hardworking, compassionate and loving husband to his wife, Norma, and a proud father to his children, James David, Michael Joseph, Mario Christopher, Georgy Ann and Jimmie, Jr.  He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues and the people of Arizona who he proudly served.

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona, the Senate concurring:

That the Members of the Legislature sincerely regret the passing of Jimmie Muñoz, Sr. and extend their deepest sympathies to his family and other surviving relatives.
