HB 2025: schools; parental classroom visitation policies

Sponsor: Representative Udall, LD 25

House Engrossed

Overview

Instructs a charter school governing body (governing body) or school district governing board (governing board) to adopt policies that allow for classroom visits, tours and observations by parents.

History

The charter of a charter school must provide for a governing body that is responsible for the policy decisions of the charter school (A.R.S. § 15-183). A charter school is required to enroll all eligible pupils who submit a timely application, unless the number of applications exceeds program, class, grade level or building capacity (A.R.S. § 15-184)

A governing board is responsible for prescribing policies to govern its schools that are not inconsistent with law or rules prescribed by the State Board of Education (A.R.S. § 15-341). Furthermore, statute directs a governing board to adopt procedures that allow parents to learn about parental rights and responsibilities, including open enrollment rights and their child's right to participate in gifted programs (A.R.S. § 15-102).
