HB 2278: alternative mathematics graduation pathway

Sponsor: Representative Fillmore, LD 16

Committee on Education

Overview

Requires the State Board of Education (SBE) to establish an alternative mathematics graduation pathway.

History

Statute directs SBE to prescribe competency requirements for the high school graduation of students. These competency requirements must incorporate the academic standards in at least the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies (A.R.S. § 15-701.01).

As such, SBE has established rules detailing high school credit requirements for students. To graduate from high school, students must correctly answer at least 60 questions on the required civics test and successfully complete at least 22 academic credits. Of these 22 credits, 4 must be in mathematics as follows:

· 3 credits that contain course content to prepare students for the statewide assessment in mathematics, are aligned to the Arizona Mathematic Standards for algebra I, geometry and algebra II and that are taken beginning in the 9th grade; and

· 1 credit that includes significant mathematics content as determined by the local school district governing board or charter school.

SBE rules detail that the algebra II requirement may be met by a math course comparable to algebra II course content or computer science, career and technical education and vocational education, economics, science and arts courses as determined by the local school district governing board or charter school (Arizona Administrative Code R7-2-302).
