Overview

Extends eligibility for the Children's Health Insurance Program (KidsCare) for 12 months after eligibility is determined.

History

The Children's Health Insurance Program is a federal program administered by the states to provide health insurance coverage to children whose families do not qualify for Medicaid but meet income qualifications. KidsCare, the name of Arizona's Children's Health Insurance Program, is administered by the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System administration (AHCCCS).

An individual is eligible for KidsCare if they are under the age of 19 and whose gross household income is no greater than 200% of the federal poverty level (A.R.S. § 36-2981). AHCCCS conducts eligibility determinations when an individual applies for KidsCare and annual redeterminations (A.R.S. § 36-2982).

Federal law allows states the option to provide continuous eligibility to Children's Health Insurance Program members for a period of up to 12 months after eligibility is determined, provided the member does not turn 19 during the 12-month period (42 U.S. Code § 1396a(e)(12)).
