Overview

Continues the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) for eight years until July 1, 2030.

History

ADJC has a statutory responsibility to supervise, rehabilitate, treat and educate delinquent youth committed to their care. As part of this statutory requirement, ADJC operates one secure care facility, the Adobe Mountain School, located in Phoenix (A.R.S. § 41-2802). The Prison Rape Elimination Act requires the department to maintain a specified staff-to-child ratio (34 U.S.C. 303). Additionally, ADJC is required to provide youth treatment programing and youth education programs (A.R.S. § 41-2831).

The Senate Judiciary Committee of Reference met on December 8, 2021, and the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee of Reference met on January 19, 2022, to conduct a review of ADJC.  Both Committees of Reference recommended ADJC be continued for 8 years until July 1, 2030.
