Sponsor: Representative Grantham, LD 12
Transmitted to Governor
Overview
Authorizes the Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA) to use up to $250,000 from the Border Security Fund (BSF) to pay for additional full-time equivalent (FTE) positions.
History
Since FY 2012, $90,000 and 1 FTE have been appropriated from the state General Fund to DEMA (A.R.S. § 26-263).
In FY 2021, the BSF was created and appropriated $55,000,000 for costs associated with body-worn cameras, cameras and equipment for the Southern Arizona border region, use of the Arizona National Guard at the Southern Arizona border region, and a pilot program to reduce human trafficking (FY 2022 Appropriations Report).
In FY 2022, the Criminal Justice Budget Reconciliation Bill required that DEMA use monies in the fund to:
1) Prevent human trafficking;
2) Prevent the entry of unlawfully present aliens, terrorists and instruments of terrorism and contraband into the United States;
3) Plan, design, construct and maintain transportation, technology and commercial vehicle inspection infrastructure near Arizona's international border;
4) Clear nonindigenous plants;
5) Administer and manage the construction and maintenance of a physical border fence;
6) Award grants to counties to provide housing in secure facilities; and
