Overview

Prescribes where the legislative district committee reorganization meeting must be held if the district lies in two or more counties.

History

A political party that is entitled to representation on the ballot is authorized to establish a district party committee for any legislative district as prescribed by law.  A district party committee consists of the precinct committeemen that reside in the district and are elected pursuant to statute.  Each district party committee must meet after the effective date of reapportionment legislation that realigns or changes legislative district boundaries and organize according to the new boundaries (A.R.S. § 16-823).

Provisions

1.   Maintains that the secretary and treasurer offices may be filled by the same person for a district party committee. (Sec. 1)

2.   Requires the district party reorganization meeting to be called and organized by the members of the district party committee who reside in the county in which most of the district party committee members reside if the district lies in two or more counties. (Sec. 1)

3.   Allows, if the district lies in two counties, the district to organize with the elected precinct committeemen from those portions of the legislative district from the other county where the remainder of the district precinct committeemen reside, without regard to whether the other count's political party has previously been organized by legislative district. (Sec. 1)

4.   Stipulates that all elected precinct committeemen in the legislative district are eligible for election to the district executive committee, but a legislative district precinct committeeman may only vote in county party meetings for the county where the precinct committeeman resides. (Sec. 1)

5.   Authorizes the chair of the district committee to designate proxies for the purpose of attending and voting at the county party's executive committee for the counties in that legislative district. (Sec. 1)
