Sponsor: Senator Gowan, LD  14

Committee on Judiciary

Overview

Instructs the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) to send renewal reminders and applications to concealed carry permit holders 60 days before the permit expires.

History

DPS is authorized to issue a permit to carry a concealed weapon, provided the applicant meets specified criteria, such as being a United States citizen and demonstrating competence with a firearm.  A permit is valid for five years unless the individual is a member of the armed forces and deployed overseas, in which case the permit is extended for 90 days after the individual's deployment ends. Before a permit can be renewed, DPS must conduct a criminal history check on the applicant.  DPS is required to conduct the criminal history check within 60 days of receiving the application for renewal (A.R.S. § 13-3112).
