Overview

Outlines the requirements for a candidate for Lieutenant Governor to be on the ballot.

History

The Executive Department of Arizona includes the Governor, Secretary of State, State Treasurer, Attorney General and Superintendent of Public Instruction (AZ. Const. Art. V § 1).

If the Governor dies, resigns, is removed from office or becomes permanently disabled, the Secretary of State succeeds the office of Governor until a successor is elected in a regular election. If the Secretary of State fails to qualify as Governor, the Attorney General, State Treasurer or Superintendent of Public Instruction succeeds the office of the Governor in the order named (AZ. Const. Art. V § 6).

Provisions

1.   Directs a candidate for Governor and who files a nomination petition, no later than 60 days before the general election, to submit to the Secretary of State the name of the person who will be the joint candidate for Lieutenant Governor and whose name will appear on the general election ballot jointly with the candidate for Governor. (Sec. 1, 2)

2.   Requires the Governor to appoint the Lieutenant Governor to serve as the Governor's chief of staff, director of the Arizona Department of Administration or to fill any position the Governor is authorized to make an appointment. (Sec. 3)

3.   Directs Legislative Council staff to prepare proposed conforming legislation for consideration in the Fifty-sixth Legislature, First Regular Session. (Sec. 4)

4.   Conditions the enactment of this legislation on the amendment of the Arizona Constitution by a vote of the people at the next general election by the passage of Senate Concurrent Resolution 1024, Fifty-fifth Legislature, Second Regular Session. (Sec. 5)
