Overview
States the Legislature prays the U.S. Congress forward fund the Higher Education Grant Program of the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE).
History
As authorized by federal law, the Higher Education Grant Program provides supplemental financial assistance to eligible American Indian and Alaska Native scholars entering college who are seeking an associate or baccalaureate degree from a nationally accredited institution (25 U.S.C. Ch. 13).
Students applying for a grant must: 1) be a member of, or at least one-quarter degree Indian blood descendent of a member of an American Indian tribe which is eligible for the special programs and services provided by BIE; 2) be accepted for admission to a nationally accredited institution of higher education; and 3) must demonstrate financial need as determined by the financial aid officer of the collegiate institution (Higher Education Grant Program).
Provisions
1. Declares the Legislature prays the U.S. Congress take affirmative steps to forward fund the BIE's Higher Education Grant Program. (Sec. 1)
2. Directs the Secretary of State to transmit copies of this memorial to specified entities. (Sec. 1).
