ARIZONA STATE SENATE

public officers; announcements; restrictions
Purpose
Prohibits a public officer from including the public officer's name or likeness in any publication, resource or public service announcement that is issued by the public officer.
Background
A public officer includes a member of the Legislature, any judge of the Court of Appeals or the superior court or a person holding an elective office with a constituency included within the entire geographical limits of Arizona (A.R.S. § 38-541). Statute outlines official acts of a public officer and requirements relating to public meetings, record keeping and conflicts of interest (A.R.S. Title 38, Chapter 3).
There is no anticipated fiscal impact to the state General Fund associated with this legislation.
Provisions
1. Prohibits a public officer, for any publication, resource or public service announcement that is issued by the public officer and distributed free of charge or using taxpayer resources, from including the public officer's name or likeness in the announcement.
2. Allows a public officer to use the name of the public officer's office on the publication, resource or public service announcement.
3. Defines public officer and public service announcement.
4. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
