SB1011: municipalities; partisan elections

Overview

Allows for municipal candidate elections to be conducted as partisan or nonpartisan.

History

City and town elections are conducted in the same manner as county officer elections, except that the returns shall be made to the clerk of the city or town, and the governing body of the city or town shall canvass the returns, declare the result and issue the certificates of the election (A.R.S. § 9-821).

A city or town election is prohibited from indicating the source of the candidacy or the support of the candidate on the ballot (A.R.S. § 9-821.01)

Provisions

1.   States that a city or town may conduct a candidate election as follows:

a)   With the candidate's political party registration indicated on the ballot; or

b)   Without the candidate's political party registration indicated on the ballot. (Sec. 1)

2.   Requires the municipal offices in a partisan election to be included on a partisan ballot. (Sec. 2)

3.   Contains a delayed effective date of January 1st, 2024. (Sec. 3)
