SB 1596: polling places; office spaces; appropriation

Sponsor: Senator Mesnard, LD 13

Transmitted to the Governor

Overview

Specifies voting centers may only be established in addition to specifically designated polling places and requires specified public offices to serve as polling places when requested.

History

Arizona utilizes two types of voting locations: polling places and voting centers. Polling places are specifically designated locations in a voting precinct where voters in a particular precinct must vote. A county conducting elections using precinct-based polling places must designate at least one polling place in each precinct. Voting Centers were authorized by an act of the Legislature in 2011 as locations within a county where individuals can vote regardless of the voting precinct the individual lives in.

Subject to approval by the Board of Supervisors, the officer in charge of elections may establish precinct-based polling places, voting centers or any combination of the two including co-location of precinct-based polling places or voting centers that also serve as polling places for certain precincts (A.R.S. § 16-411).
