Overview

Appropriates $250,000 from the state General Fund to the Arizona Trail Fund in FY 2024 and exempts this appropriation from lapsing.

History

The Arizona Trail is a State Scenic trail that stretches 800 miles across the state from Mexico to Utah. It was also designated a National Scenic Trail in 2009 (Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009). The Arizona State Parks Board (ASPB) is responsible for

1)   maintaining the trail;

2)   providing information to persons involved in the design and signage for the trail;

3)   encouraging counties and municipalities to preserve the trail right-of-way;

4)   cooperating with federal and state land management agencies to prepare a trail management plan;

5)   coordinating the trail plan with other activities and land uses;

6)   coordinating the trail plan with private nonprofit support organizations; and

7)   accepting gifts and grants of private and public monies to assist in these purposes.

The Arizona Trail Fund consists of legislative appropriations and donations for the purposes of maintaining and preserving the Arizona Trail (A.R.S. § 41-511.15). The FY 2023 budget appropriated $250,000 from the state General Fund to this fund (Laws 2022, Chapter 313).
